Case Study: Deaf Awareness Training

Supporting Deaf Awareness within a Care Setting

A primary goal for Living 4 Moments is to help residential homes to establish an environment in which their residents are empowered to live their lives to the full. With the knowledge and understanding gained from Deaf Awareness training for care home staff, a local hospice in York now has the foundations for improved communication and understanding between staff, patients and visitors.

Living 4 Moments delivered Deaf Awareness training to staff at St. Leonard’s Hospice, a care home in York. This included internal team members as well as staff from hospice partners, such as Bereavement Services.

The hospice is a very special place that is well-respected in the community. The staff and volunteers work hard to be inclusive of deaf patients and visitors and understand the importance of providing an environment in which their residents and staff can flourish. Training from Living 4 Moments was a fantastic fit for a care home looking to continue to enhance the skills of their staff.

The first session, funded by York and North Yorkshire Growth Hub, was so well-received that St. Leonard’s commissioned a further six Deaf Awareness training sessions.

Tailored Training Sessions

Training sessions were delivered on site and in-person to groups of staff. The sessions were based around a presentation covering the key points of deaf awareness and was tailored to the needs of the staff and residents of St. Leonard’s. All our sessions are led in a highly interactive way, where conversation and practical exercises are a key part of how participants engage in Living 4 Moment’s Deaf Awareness training.

Outcomes

Training for care home staff at St. Leonard’s equipped them with practical skills that have improved the overall understanding of living with hearing loss. The high level of deaf awareness within the hospice improves the quality of life of residents and enhances the efficacy of the care that the staff deliver.
